Why do we need 100,000 signatures?

I was a little puzzled as to why Mr Tan Kin Lian needed 100,000 signatures before he ran? I never knew that you needed to get signatures to run for any office in Singapore. Maybe he was quoted out of context by the newspapers? Because if not… Then it worries me that Mr Tan needs those signatures.

Here are my fears if what he said was true:

  1. He has no confidence that people want him to run and needs some sort of assurance. He does not want to run just for the sake of offering himself for public office (waste of time and money).
  2. He needs an ego stroke. Nothing says you’re popular like 100,000 people saying you should run for public office.

Don’t get me wrong, I respect Mr Tan for what he’s been doing, and I really think the newspapers misquoted him. The thing is, anyone who really cares about his community and really wanted to serve does not need a petition to get him to run. He just runs. Sure he may need a little convincing from close friends and advisers, but I don’t think anyone needs 100,000 strangers to tell him he should go for it. Normally the considerations to run or not revolve around the disruption it causes your personal circle of family and friends.

So why do we need 100,000 signatures? Can someone tell me?

  1. Never heard of the requirement of 100K signatures to run for office before in my life till now.

It might be for use against possible future ‘talk downs’ that might imply that he wasn’t popular enough to run in the first place.

  2. I dun think there’s such a requirement. I guess he just needs a boost in confidence in the form of supporters (100k)

I mean, i think i’m passionate enough. But i doubt i’m smart enough. But i can still try to run for it even though i’m not eligible. But it doesn’t matter u see, since no one will vote for me even if i can come up with some great great directions to move the country in.

But if i do ve the passion, and smart enough and eligible, wat better to move me to run for office?
