My organization has gotten two of the OLPC XO-1s to see if they can write open source software for it. When I first heard about this project 3 years ago (Dear Sir, Thank you for the Economist) I thought it was a fantastic idea. And now it is a reality.
Bunnie does a good review of it, and I must say based on bunnie, it is a fantastic little machine. It was rather interesting because my colleague was talking about the ASUS Eee Computer which is based on the same idea, but not for charity. It’s just for rich world geeks.
If you really want a flash memory laptop consider getting a OLPC XO-1. You can get it under the donate one, get one program (although I think it might only be for N America). You can find out more about the whole OLPC program at their website or their wiki entry.
Yeah so get one if you can. It’s only US$200, and one goes to some child in the third world.
